Student of the Year has been a game-changing film not just for its maker, Karan Johar, but for the whole of B-town! The film packs many firsts and a campus romance directed by Karan Johar and produced by Dharma Productions and Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment. So what makes this film different from the rest directed by Karan Johar? Well, Student of the Year is Karan’s first without Shah Rukh Khan in the lead. Apart from that, the film is the Dharma Productions chief’s first directorial venture with three newcomers in the lead, Siddharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt. Never before has Karan roped in debutants to play the primary roles in his films.
And that’s not all! This is Bollywood veteran Rishi Kapoor’s first film in a gay role! The actor, who has on previous account played romantic roles, has taken up the unconventional role of a gay school dean named Yogendra Vasisht. The principal of the fictional educational institute, St. Teresa’s High School that serves as a backdrop for this campus romance, Rishi’s character is lovable, charming and well-portrayed. “I wouldn’t say he’s gay… not the correct gender orientation. He’s not married, is soft on the PT coach. It’s a different take of what we have done. It is a very sensitive approach,” said Rishi Kapoor.
Also, the film has changed the way gays are portrayed on the big screen. To this, Rishi Kapoor added, “Yes, the role is not a caricature in our film. Film characters depend on directors. In SOTY, it was a personal take by Karan, the director and Rishi, the actor.”
The film released on the 19th of October, 2012, and was crowned a blockbuster.
