Karan Johar shows his competitive spirit with Bombay Talkies

Filmmaker Karan Johar has always had a competitive spirit and has been sportily working towards the brighter side of the rainbow! The Dharma Productions chief showed his competitive nature while shooting for his segment in Bombay Talkies too. The film is being directed by three more filmmakers besides Karan, including Anurag Kashyap, Dibakar Banerjee and      Zoya Akhtar. “During the making of this film, I was obsessed by what the others were doing. I wanted to know how many days they shot, what their films were about. I’m very competitive by nature and we all want to be better than the other,” said Karan. Bombay Talkies

He also went on to add, “But when four of us got together at Zoya’s place and we saw the films, there was nothing but love at the end of it – eventually that emotion of cinema and passion overrides that sense of ambition and competition and that’s what happened to me. I’m sure the same happened to the other three too.”

Each of the filmmakers have directed a 20 minute segment in the film, all of which will be put together to form the film, Bombay Talkies. This is a tribute to the 100 years of Hindi cinema and the filmmakers have each worked with a tight budget to create their segments. Karan added, “Having said that, I always wanted to know if Anurag Kashyap had shot his films in five days because my production was giving me a tough time. Zoya Akhtar took nine days and I could find out nothing about Dibakar Banerjee. He was the most secretive and the sneakiest of the lot.”

“It was difficult to make a film under a budget,”- Karan Johar on Bombay Talkies

The upcoming film, Bombay Talkies, has been quite the talk of town recently. The film incorporates four short-films and is a tribute to the 100 years of Hindi cinema. Bombay Talkies has segments directed by some of the country’s most prominent filmmakers including Karan Johar, Anurag Kashyap, Zoya Akhtar and Dibakar Banerjee. Each of these short films will run for 20 minutes and the format was indeed a challenge for these filmmakers, particularly the Dharma Productions chief, Karan Johar, who has previously unveiled films running well over 200 minutes each!

“We have our own style of film making but we didn’t have much budget. First of all nobody gives me a budget because I have always made larger than life films. This is for the first time I have to work under a budget and it was difficult to make a film under a budget. The budget was Rs 1.5 crore each. We consciously made an effort to make it in 1.5 crores… we did not cheat by putting our own money into it,” Karan Johar said.

Previously, Karan has spent lavishly on the films he directs and produces. The budget was indeed tight and the timeframe proved to make the creation of these short-films a little more than a piece of cake. Karan cast seasoned actors including Randeep Hooda and Rani Mukherjee in the film, with newcomer Saqib Saleem. When asked why he hadn’t cast his good friend Shah Rukh Khan in Bombay Talkies, Karan said, “I haven’t thought of Shah Rukh Khan because he is part of my life, part of my system. I look up to him and I didn’t think off casting him because there was no character for him in this film.”

Alia Bhatt says why she didn’t choose home territory for her debut

Alia, the daughter of filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, might hail from the Bhatt camp, but that simply hasn’t kept her from being launched by one of Bollywood’s biggest film stables, Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. The 19-year-old recently made her big-screen debut with Karan Johar’s Student of the Year alongside newcomers Siddharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan. A campus romance to be precise, Student of the Year features its three rising stars play the roles of students at an extravagant school, complete with Karan’s signature touch of dream-like glamour. Alia Bhatt

For Alia, being launched by Dharma Productions seemed a safe and sound stepping stone into the Bollywood industry. A fan of song and dance routines that usually add the frills to most of Karan Johar’s movies, Alia had no qualms about her debut film. Quoting Alia Bhatt, “But seriously, I enjoy dancing. I attended Shiamak Davar’s dance classes, trained in Bharatnatyam for two years. So, it’s not entirely new to me.” She has also previously stated that she had no wish to be launched by her father. Instead, for Alia, being launched by a production house away from is more than just a challenge. “If a doctor’s son wants to be a doctor, he’s sent to a medical school to study. In the same way, I want to go out and study acting for myself. If I had started off with my father’s film, it would’ve all been too easy,” says Alia.

Up ahead, Alia will star in yet another Karan Johar project, the film adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s bestseller, 2 States. The actress will play a South Indian girl in the film and will star alongside Arjun Kapoor.

Karan Johar experiences a transition in his movie-making style

Directing campus romances is what filmmaker Karan Johar seems to know best and has proved the same yet again with Student of the Year. Starring three newcomers in the lead, Siddharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt, this film is a romantic drama that revolves around the lives of three youngsters who fall in and out of love.karan johar (8)

This is also the first time Karan Johar has directed a film without his lucky mascot and close friend Shah Rukh Khan. This was Karan’s first without Bollywood bigwigs. “Working with the best actors and setting up a project with movie stars was almost easy. Them doing exactly what they are capable of, which is brilliance, and me just being there and conducting this whole opera would have been wonderful, but not something I hadn’t already done before. Working with first time actors, nurturing them, making sure they present themselves as movie actors, was a far more challenging experience. I felt the need to challenge myself,” said Karan Johar recently.

Also, when asked about the similarities in the feel of his campus romance with the likes of previously released Hollywood movies, Karan went on to add, “I haven’t even seen High School Musical and I don’t think I have even seen a full episode of Glee. I don’t even know how to answer the question when people ask me what the film is about. It happens to be set on a college campus and that’s where the similarity ends if indeed there is any. There is no outside influence from which the story is drawn.”

Karan Johar tweeted to confirm the film’s name and its fresh star-cast. The Dharma Productions chief tweeted the following, “The title of the Dharma-Phantom film with @S1dharthM and @ParineetiChopra is Hasee toh Phasee!!!….#haseetohphasee (sic).” The film is to be directed by Vinil Mathew who has previously directed ad films for a coffee brand that starred Deepika Padukone and Karan Johar. “The film is a quintessential love story that will feature a young cast. We will announce the names in a few days,” said Karan, adding, “The way he (Vinil Mathew) handles relationships in his ads is something you can’t ignore. And that is what he is doing in our film too.”

That apart, Karan Johar has also made known his thoughts on Anurag Kashyap and his production house, Phantom Films. “I have a lot of admiration for the production house since it has directors like Vikas Bahl, Vikramaditya Motwane and Anurag at the helm. I have had such exciting meetings with them, with all the directors discussing storylines, titles and other details of Vinil’s film,” stated Karan.

There has been no news about the release date of this upcoming film. Neither the actors nor the director have divulged much either.

Student of the Year – Bollywood’s take on youthful exploits

In the last decade, the Dharma Productions chief, Karan Johar, has directed, produced and rolled out blockbusters and has stuck to the formula of sprinkling all of his directorial ventures with glitz and extravagance. Karan Johar has previously mentioned the talent and diligence his new cast has shown during the making of the film. The trio has accompanied the director on tours across the nation and abroad to promote the film. While Siddharth Malhotra and Varun have worked with Karan as Assistant Directors before for the 2010 film My Name Is Khan, Alia was auditioned for Student of the Year amongst 500 more hopefuls. A home to the wealthy and affluent, the school is presided over by a gay dean, Yogendra Vasisht (Rishi Kapoor). Karan Johar chooses his work over dating and relationships

Karan Johar has been crafting stories revolving around love and relationships since quite a while now, but it does seem like the filmmaker is keeping away from the dating realm altogether! He has been in the news off-late with the announcement of his upcoming films, Hasee Toh Phasee and Gori Tere Pyar Mein. The Dharma Productions chief also managed to grab a load of attention with his trend-breaking campus romance, Student of the Year, skaran (7)tarring Siddharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt. But that isn’t all that’s keeping this multifaceted filmmaker on the front pages and in the headlines. Being one of the most prominent director-producers in the country and certainly one of B-town’s most eligible bachelors, Karan Johar has been asked about his relationship status time and again.

Karan said, “Right now I am not ready for any kind of relationship as I am too used to my independence. Marriage is a definite no-no. I am totally married to my company. Emotionally, my mother fills up the void in my life. So there it is. My company is a spouse I will never cheat on, and my mother completes me as a son. I think I have a full family unit of my own. I am happy probably because I am single. Let’s face it, how many married people are really happy? Just kidding (laughs)!”

Heading a production house like Dharma Productions certainly isn’t easy and Karan went on to emphasize that he is married to his work – the art of filmmaking, and will remain so as long as he likes.
